Amy Trocke

Amy Trocke has over 20 years of experience in the development of medical devices. She most recently worked as the Director of Product Development at SurModics developing cardiovascular and peripheral vascular access and thrombectomy devices. Prior to SurModics, Ms. Trocke worked in R&D at St. Jude Medical for five years developing implantable structural heart devices along with devices for renal denervation and cardiac pacing. Early in her career, Ms. Trocke worked in R&D engineering at three successful start-ups: AngioGuard, which was purchased by Cordis in 1999; Evalve, which was purchased by Abbott in 2009; and Micrus Corp, which was purchased by Johnson & Johnson in 2010. Ms. Trocke is an inventor on 18 U.S. patents; she holds a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering from Northwestern University and an M.S. in Management of Technology from the University of Minnesota. email: [email protected]

Jessica Thomas

Jessica Thomas received her Bachelors of Biomedical Engineering from the University of Minnesota and her Juris Doctor from William Mitchell College of Law. She practices at Kinney & Lange, P.A. and focuses on all areas of intellectual property, with an emphasis on patents and trademarks. Jessica works with clients to prepare and file patent applications on a range of technologies, ranging from medical devices to gas turbine engines.   email: [email protected]

Maximillian Fiore

Max Fiore has been developing medical devices since 1977 at various companies including Abbott Laboratories, Johnson and Johnson, Aradigm Corporation, Smith-Nephew Corporation, to name a few. Most recently he was Chief Product Development Officer, NxThera, Inc. and Chief Technology Officer, American Medical Systems. 

He currently sits on two corporate boards. His major accomplishments include development of the first Patient Controlled Analgesia system in the US, the Abbott IMx Automated Immunoassay Analyzer and the AERx pulmonary drug delivery system. He holds BSEE and BS Engineering Sciences degrees from Northwestern University, and an MSEE degree from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. email: [email protected]

Vaughn Schmid

Vaughn Schmid joined Technology Commercialization in January 2017 and works primarily with Medical Device and Creative Works technologies. Prior to joining the UMN team, Vaughn worked in the Grants and Contracts Office at the Medical College of Wisconsin, where he reviewed and managed medical research grant applications, awards, and associated IP.

Vaughn received his J.D. from the University of Wisconsin Law School, focusing on intellectual property and business law. While in law school, he worked as a student attorney for the UW Law and Entrepreneurship Clinic, providing intellectual property and other business-related legal services to local startup companies and small businesses. Prior to attending law school, Vaughn received a B.A. in biology from Carleton College and worked for MedTox Laboratories as a clinical sales rep. email: [email protected]

Armando Mitchell

Armando Mitchell currently serves as Director of Sales Operations and Commercial Strategy of the Pelvic Health & Gastric Therapies business at Medtronic.  In this role, he is responsible for leading cross-functional initiatives to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of the 200+ person sales force, aimed at accelerating revenue growth and profitability for the business unit.

Prior to joining Pelvic Health, Armando led corporate development efforts including mergers and acquisitions, strategic alliances, minority investments, and technology licenses for Medtronic.  He has 13+ years of experience in Medtronic across engineering, clinical research, sales, market development, business development/M&A - including extensive field experience within urology practices covering Sacral Neuromodulation and Percutaneous Tibial Neuromodulation therapies for overactive bladder.

Armando holds an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, with concentrations in Finance, Strategic Management and Entrepreneurship, earned a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities and currently serves on their Industry Advisory Board.
